Meet some of the members of the Middletown Kiwanis Club that have been featured recently on the Club’s Facebook account.

Amanda Allen, Kiwanis Member

Meet Captain Amanda Allen who has been a member of Kiwanis since 2016. She is currently a Pastor at the Salvation Army in Middletown with her husband. Amanda also teaches in the Salvation Army Youth Programs. She loves how Kiwanis makes an impact in the community with children and that is in perfect alignment with the Salvation Army and their commitment to the community.

Frances Amelio, Club President 2017-2018

Meet Fran Amelio who has been a member of Kiwanis since 2004. Fran is a past Board Member, Secretary, President and current Lt. Governor elect. Fran is retired from the Hendrick Hudson Free Library after 25 years. She is the current Chairperson of Community Events as well as Human and Spiritual Aims Committees. She has been extremely dedicated to the Warming Station and Salvation Army where she is also a board member. Fran is the Broker/Owner of Amelio Real Estate for the past 40 years. She enjoys being involved with the children and her local community and recommends Kiwanis to anyone looking to participate in these amazing and fulfilling activities.

Joseph Barrett, Board Member

Meet Joe Barrett who has been a member of Kiwanis since 2000. Joe is currently a Board Member and has served on the Board in the past. He has been employed with Integrated Medical Services since 2016. Joe is retired from the New York State Police where he was an Investigator for 30 years in multiple counties. He was familiar with Kiwanis and when he was approached by Rick Scott he was ready and willing to join. Joe likes that Middletown Kiwanis works like a team in everything they do, and helping the community and its children is extremely rewarding.

Carl Berkowitz, Kiwanis Member

Meet Carl Berkowitz who has been a member of Kiwanis since 2014. Carl retired in 2020 from Out-of-Print Books for Scholars, his own company. He was an elected member of the Thrall Board of Trustees for 21 years and a past President of the Board for 4 years. Carl served on the Ramapo Catskill Library System Board of Trustees for 20 years and 4 years as a past President. He is an active member of Kiwanis and attends most meetings and events. Carl is greatly appreciative of how Kiwanis interacts with other organizations.

Charlie Brodie, Kiwanis Member

Meet Charlie Brodie who has been a member of Kiwanis since 1992. He is an architect by profession and has lived in Orange County since 1990. Charlie bought Randall Airport in 1984 and has kept it on life support ever since. The weekends are extremely busy there with glider activity, hang glider activity, hot air balloons and smaller aircraft. His pet lamb is The Valley Soaring Club. Warren Kelly had invited Charlie to Kiwanis and the rest is history. Charlie enjoys the incredibly good work the Middletown Kiwanis Club does and would recommend it to anyone.

Barbara Christgau, Kiwanis Board Member

Meet Barbara Christgau who has been a member of Kiwanis since 2021. She serves on the Kiwanis Board and invites anyone looking to help children to consider being a Kiwanis member. She relocated to Orange County from Rockland County in 2016 and absolutely loves this area. Barbara is retired from 33 years at The Mercedes Benz Headquarters in Montvale, NJ. She has been a very active member since her first day and attends all meetings and events.

Barbara Chumard, Kiwanis Board Member

Meet Barbara Chumard who has been a member of Kiwanis since 2012. She has served on the Board of Kiwanis and is the public relations coordinator for the Middletown Kiwanis Club. Barbara is currently retired from the Middletown Thrall Library after many years as a reference Librarian. She is a very active member and attends all meetings. Barbara enjoys all aspects of Kiwanis, but especially enjoys accompanying her husband as they attend the various events offered by all of the Hudson River West Clubs.

Geary Chumard, Club President 2010-2011, 2018-2019, Div. Lt. Governor 2023-2024

Meet Gef Chumard who has been a member of Kiwanis since 1973. He has just been installed as Lt. Governor for the 2023/2024 Kiwanis year. He is married with 2 daughters and 2 grandchildren. Gef is retired from Clark Patterson Engineers & Architects. He is a very active member and attends all meetings and events. The Chumard family believes that giving back to the community is important and people who are looking to do so can find that satisfaction in joining Kiwanis.

Diane Flynn, Club President 2021-2022

Meet Diane Flynn who has been a member of Kiwanis since 1998. She is a past President and Board Member. During her time as President the Middletown Kiwanis Club received the Distinguished Club Award. She also started the plastic recycling Governor’s project where we collect recyclable plastics and turn them into benches which are donated to the community. Diane is a Committee Chair for The Young Children’s Program and Club Advisor for The Action Club. Diane is currently retired from The State Retirement system where she worked several departments over a 20 year span. She is a very active member and attends most meetings and events.

Hazel Goldstein, Club President 2014-2015, Division Lt. Governor 2020-2021

Meet Hazel Goldstein who has been a Kiwanis member since 2011. She is a current Board Member and Vice President. She is a past President and HRW Lieutenant Governor. She currently serves as the Builders Club Administrator for the New York District. She serves as the Chairman for the 2024 Middletown Kiwanis Club Tricky Tray. Hazel is currently employed as the co-owner of Marlu Costumes and has been since 1980. Hazel is a very active member and has always loved working in the community and Kiwanis allows her that opportunity.

John Goldstein, Club President 2002-2003, 2022-2023, Div. Lt. Governor 2005-2006, District Key Club Administrator 2011-

Meet John Goldstein who has been a member of Kiwanis since 1996. He has previously served two terms as Club President and currently serves as the District Administrator for the NY District Key Club. He is married with 2 children and 3 grandchildren. John has owned Marlu Costumes with his wife Hazel since 1980. He is a very active member and attends all meetings and events. John is a firm believer in the mission of Kiwanis which is “Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at time.”

Daniel Higbie, Club President 2015-2016, Division Lt. Governor 2019-2020

Meet Dan Higbie who has been a member of Kiwanis since 2009. He has been a Kiwanis Board Member, past President and past Lieutenant Governor of Hudson River West. Dan is currently employed as the general manager of Mid-City Transit and has been with them since 2004. He is a very active member and attends most meetings and events. Louis Ingrassia, Kiwanis Member

Meet Lou Ingrassia who has been a member of Kiwanis since 2012. Lou is currently employed at the Town of Wallkill as Commissioner of Public Works where he has been employed since 1986. He is a lifetime Volunteer Firefighter with the Howells Fire Department and a Board Member of Hudson Valley Honor Flight. He is a past President of the Orange County Fire Chiefs and Orange County Fire Districts Association. Lou is a lifetime volunteer and loves helping the community so when Fran Amelio reached out, he was happy to become a member of The Middletown Kiwanis Club.

Charles Krogslund, Club President 1976-1977, Division Lt. Governor 2007-2008

Meet Chuck Krogslund who has been a member of Kiwanis since 1970. Chuck is a past Distinguished President, Distinguished Lt. Governor and is a current board member. He was President of the Middletown High School Key Club in his senior year and Vice President of OCCC Circle K Club. He is currently retired from his own accounting firm KKBNN CPA’S after 42 years. Chuck is the current Chairperson for the annual golf tournament as well as the poinsettia fundraiser. Chuck and his wife love the camaraderie of Kiwanis and the immense help they bring to the community.

Gerda Krogslund, Club President 2009-2010, Division Lt. Governor 2014-2015

Meet Gerda Krogslund who has been a member of Kiwanis since 2003. Gerda is a past Distinguished President, Lt. Governor and current club secretary. Gerda is retired from North Rockland High School as a math teacher for 33 years. She is the liaison for the Builder’s Club. She is a Master Gardener with Cornell Cooperative Extension in Middletown. When she was Lt. Governor she created the Washingtonville Kiwanis Club which is very active today. Gerda and her husband attend meetings and events and thoroughly enjoy the camaraderie of The Middletown Kiwanis Club.

Dr. Thomas Littner, Kiwanis Member

Meet Dr. Thomas Littner who has been a member of Kiwanis since 1983. Dr. Littner was born and raised in Middletown and continues to live there today. He was a Key Club member in Middletown High School and President of the Circle K Kiwanis Club at college level. Dr. Littner is a previous Board Member. He is currently newly retired from Cornerstone Dental where he was a Dentist and Owner for 40 years. Now that he is fully retired Dr. Littner will be attending more meetings and events. He is very community minded and loves to help where he can in his community. 

Christine Mahoney, Club President 2019-2021, Kiwanis Board Member

Meet Christine Mahoney who has been a member of Kiwanis since 2001. She is a past President and was President during the Covid epidemic. As a result it presented issues that have never been dealt with as an organization such as new ways to meet and to carry out our fundraising and events. Christine is currently retired from the Banking Industry after 19 years. She was first involved with the Chester Kiwanis Club, serving as Treasurer. She then joined the Monticello Kiwanis Club where she served as their President. She is an active member and attends all meetings and events.

John McCarey, Club President 1974-1975 Division Lt. Governor 1974-1975

Meet John McCarey who has been a member of Kiwanis since 1967. John is currently retired from the County of Orange as Director of Real Property for the past 20 years and he is currently an Associate Real Estate Broker with Remax Benchmark in the Middletown office. John is an active member and attends meetings and events. The fellowship and community service means a lot to John and Kiwanis allows him to contribute to the community and its children.

Ross Miceli, Kiwanis Member

Meet Ross Miceli who has been a member of Kiwanis since 2021. Ross is currently the CEO of The YMCA of Middletown and has been with them for since 2006. He is so pleased to be in a position where he can positively change the lives of so many families and children in our community. Whether it’s helping offer scholarship assistance, or helping children build confidence through YMCA programs, or helping a family get healthy by participating in exercise, he is happy to be able to help impact the lives of children and families in our area. Ross joined Kiwanis as they too focus on the community and its children and this is something that blends smoothly with his work in the YMCA.

Margarita Ostergaard, Kiwanis Member

Meet Margarita Ostergaard who has been a member of Kiwanis since 2023. She is a mother to one son and 2 grandchildren who currently attend college. After being a librarian at the Behrend Campus of Penn State she then taught American in Lima, Peru. Margarita was an English and GED teacher in many different locations for Drug Rehabilitation Facilities. She is a very active member and attends all meetings and events. She has been so happy to be a member of Kiwanis as she has always loved to help children and the community.

Claire Piccorelli, Kiwanis Member

Meet Claire Piccorelli who has been a member of Kiwanis since 2015. Claire is a previous Board Member and volunteers happily at all the events. She is currently employed with the YMCA of Middletown for the past 10 years as an Executive Administrator. She is a former Paralegal from several different Westchester County Law Firms. Yvonne DeSimone invited Claire to join Kiwanis as part of her position with the YMCA and she loves being a member. Claire’s favorite things are the meeting and events as she has a blast with all of the members. Claire recommends Kiwanis to anyone looking to support their community and its children.

William Ruggles, Kiwanis Member

Meet Bill Ruggles who has been a member of Kiwanis since 1985. Bill co-chaired the campaign for the establishment of the Pediatric Emergency Room at Garnet Health Medical Center. He was involved in the capital campaign to fund the Infusion & Chemotherapy Center and is currently involved in The Every Minute Counts Campaign which is the Cardiac Care Center. He retired from the Middletown School District after 32 years and is the current owner of DECAT Driving School which has been teaching people to drive since 1981. Community involvement is the backbone of Kiwanis and Bill feels very strongly about helping children and the community.

Terry Saturno, Club President 2007-2008 Kiwanis Board Member

Meet Terry Saturno who has been a member of Kiwanis since 1990. She is a Board Member, past President and Treasurer for many years. Terry was awarded Kiwanian of the Year in 2000. Terry is a past President and CEO of Orange Bank & Trust Company and currently sits on the Board. She is a very active member and attends most meetings and events. Terry is so very proud to be part of The Kiwanis Club of Middletown, an organization that does remarkable work and is often under recognized for its work with children and the community.

Rick Scott, Club President 2011-2012, 2023-2024

Meet Rick Scott who has been a member of Kiwanis since 2003. He is the current club President for the 2023/2024 year. He has served on the Board, was Chairman of the Membership Committee and has been Chairman of the Pancake Day Fundraiser since 2013. He acquired the name of Captain Pancake from his diligence and leadership to this very important fundraiser. Rick is currently retired from Mid-Hudson Psychiatric Center after 28 years. He is in private practice and serving the community as an LMHC.

Sue Scott, Kiwanis Member

Meet Sue Scott who has been a member of Kiwanis since 2011. She is a past Board Member and wife to the current President of the Middletown Kiwanis Club, Rick Scott. Sue is currently retired from the Pine Bush School District as a teacher after 30+ years. She attends all meetings and events and is an avid supporter of Kiwanis and their commitment to children. She enjoys being a Kiwanian because of the great clubs we have, the people she is getting to know and the awesome projects our club is doing for the children and community of Middletown.

Sue Sheehan, Club President 2006-2007 Division Lt. Governor 2011-2012, 2016-2017

Meet Sue Sheehan who has been a member of Kiwanis since 2003. Sue is a past President, the current President Elect and a past distinguished Lt. Governor twice. Sue is actively involved with Young Children Priority One and is the current Key Club Advisor. She retired from SUNY Orange working in higher education for 40 years. Sue also retired as a 20 year board member from the Middletown Salvation Army Advisory Board. Sue attends all meetings and events. A past member Ada had asked Sue to join Middletown Kiwanis and the rest is history. Kiwanis has been her extended family and continues to greatly enrich her life.

Jon Thompson, Kiwanis Board Member

Meet Jon Thompson who has been a member of Kiwanis since 1985. He is a current Board Member for the past year. Jon is the current Membership Chairman and works diligently to up our Middletown Kiwanis Club membership. He is currently retired from The Electric Power Generation Industry after 32 years and a prior 20 years in the Hospitality Industry. He is a very active member and attends most meetings and events.

Marilyn Torley, Kiwanis Member

Meet Marilyn Torley who has been a member of Kiwanis since 2023. Marilyn has been a Middletown resident since March of 2020 when she relocated here from Clifton, NJ. She is currently employed at Fei Tian College as an assistant Provost for the past year. Marilyn had attended a Kiwanis meeting with a friend and was inspired by the deep community outreach and camaraderie of the members and now she is one of our newest members.
